How long a game takes to start
Walter has to find a free machine, wake it, sign Steam in as you, and load the game before anything appears.
The screen tells you what it is doing while you wait, so you can tell a slow launch from a stuck one.
2 things to try
A launch that is working keeps changing what it says.
- Watch the message on the screen. While it changes, the launch is moving.
- If the same message has been there for three minutes, close the play screen.
- Press play again from the game page. You land on a different machine.
The first run of a game on any machine builds a graphics cache. Later runs on that machine reuse it.
- Play the same title twice in a week. The second launch is usually quicker.
- Keep the tab open while you wait. Closing it hands the machine back and the next attempt starts from nothing.
