Low latency is the whole game. Here is how Walter keeps the stream fast, steady and responsive.
Speed is the whole game. A stream that keeps up feels like the game is running right there on your screen. A stream that lags feels broken in a way no resolution can fix. That is the bar we build to.
The milliseconds budget
Every click you make has to travel to the rig, get processed by the game, get rendered, encoded, streamed back and drawn on your screen. All of that inside a few dozen milliseconds, sixty times a second or more. Blow the budget anywhere in the chain and your hands notice before your eyes do.
Most of that budget gets eaten by one thing: distance. Signals take time to travel, and a data center three countries away spends your entire budget on the road.
How Walter stays fast
- The rig stays close. Walter runs on a distributed network of gaming rigs instead of a handful of central data centers, so the trip between you and the game is short. In testing we are seeing 10 to 20ms on a good connection.
- Steady frames. A stable framerate is what your hands actually feel. A locked 60 beats a wobbly 90, so we tune for consistency first and peak numbers second.
- A tight pipeline. The encode is built for speed over everything else, so the picture stays crisp while the input stays snappy.
What you can do on your end
The stream is only as good as the connection carrying it. Two tips that make a real difference: use 5GHz WiFi or a cable instead of 2.4GHz, and close the video call before the boss fight. Walter adapts to what your network gives it, but a clean connection gives it more to work with.
